Dumbfounded. The early morning text read, “”From Rolling Stone, which is more Biblical than Liberty U, apparently.” If that won’t wake up the preacher in you, it will at least startle any relationship to Evangelicalism one may have. No Trumpeter Here The recent decision by The Donald to boycott the next Presidential candidate debate on...

Almost four months ago workers removed a Ten Commandments monument from the Capital grounds in Oklahoma City. Maybe it was premature. What if rather than a testimony to pagans the Judeo-Christian God designed a pattern for people to live together in the world, the monument served as a reminder to the State Legislators that the...

Knowing what someone says does not always equal knowing what someone means. It may be as silly as whether to use soda or coke. Much of your decision is learned from your context. Do you invite someone for a soda? If so, it may mean you will offer a variety of flavored carbonated beverages. Do...

Have you ever stared into a small grave disturbed by the mini-casket laying in the dirt, know nothing about the young, very young, parents, seeing no family or friends . . . grappling with the pastoral moment and your neatly packaged systematic theology and feeling all your patterned responses from that untried place sounds like...

A post about Gun Control would garner more interest than one explaining the reboot of a podcast. But, I will take that risk using a gun analogy.  We did not grow up hunters, or around guns for that matter, in our house. We did have cap guns. Eventually we even had a BB gun. When...

Scot McKnight suggests a New Year’s Resolution: Let’s have better conversations. He abridged a series of posts he put together a few years ago, before he moved to Patheos for his blog. Inspired by the book The Age of Conversation, McKnight proposed observing these marks of a good conversation: First, a good conversation (and therefore...

Her name is Moriah Wierschem. Christianity Today‘s piece, Liberty Student: Why I Didn’t Cheer for Jerry Falwell Jr, provides a glimpse into the minds of a number of students who do not share their University President’s call to arms amid the thundering applause of the gathered crowd. Maybe CT thought the story title best represented...

Blame it on the ice storm. My original intent was to announce the winner of my recent, “Name That Podcast,” contest on Friday. Intermittent service due to the recent icepocalypse in our area prompted the delay. Thanks to All Who Submitted Thank you to all who entered the contest by submitting a suggestion. Here are...

Once upon a time a small community grew up within a larger city. The people gathered to consider the shared benefits of local government and schools, shared life together. Over time the small community grew. Its boundaries, it city limits, determined the scope for its services. One day it dawned on the once small community...

Last week I began running a contest to help name a new podcast venture for Pastor-Theologians. Have you entered? To date there are several good possibilities and a couple that made me laugh out loud. It was a good thing no one was around! If you missed the long post with the explanation, read it...

What’s in a name? Shakespeare prompted us to think with the words of Juliet,  O! be some other name: What’s in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet; So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d, Retain that dear perfection which he owes      ...

Trump and Carson now run neck and neck in a recent poll. One wonders what that means. Most of us acknowledge it is too early to tell. Late in the summer I began adding Interviews to my podcast. Since I host the podcasts on my personal account I do not have accurate stats as to...

Who is surprised Donald Trump knows little about Adventism? Most do not know much about it. Trump’s recent recall of his Presbyterian connections, not the degree of his adherence to that branch of the Christian Tree, illustrates how influential Evangelical discipleship has been on elections since Reagan. Between the Blind Men What is up with […]

Meteorologists alert us to changing weather patterns. One of our local television stations offers a Bus Stop Forecast. Most parents want to know what weather appropriate clothing to choose for their children any given day. We may make adjustments by adding a layer or putting on a short sleeve shirt. What happens when the weather […]

I used to hate silence. Not so much anymore. Only the wind blowing in the trees through the Gap breaks the stillness. Occasionally I think I can hear the constant flow of the Rio Grande. Then a car interrupts the natural white noise. Marilynne and the President Recently Marilynne Robinson found herself interviewed by President […]
